“WELLINGTON RIFLES”

Service Rifle and Living History Unit

[Incorporated]

 MISSION BRIEFING

“WELLINGTON RIFLES” Service Rifle and Living History Unit Incorporated exists to promote the understanding, preservation and practice of New Zealand’s Military skills and history.

Being a story of a small nation willing to make military contributions in situations that might have been assessed as being beyond us, the skill, determination and ingenuity of the Kiwi fighting man forms a key role in the development of New Zealand as a People and a Nation. Preserving that story in a tangible and accessible way is the core activity of the unit whether during live fire of blank fire activity. The paper target shooting focus and activities of NZ Service rifle is supported by the unit but is not appropriate as a unit activity being too far divorced from historical conditions. Unit Live Fire should wherever possible re create as authentic a challenge as possible without compromising safety.

Primary focus will be the involvement in:

World War 1 – 7th Wellington Infantry Regiment,

World War 2 - 22 (Motor) Battalion  2 N.Z.E.F, and

Vietnam (“Whiskey 3” 6RAR/NZ ANZAC 1969.)

By the practice of skill at arms an appreciation of the technical difficulties of combat marksmanship, a collection of working small arms (Both to preserve and display the wide range of equipment used over the last century) and selected living history display/ training experience elements, the unit intends to not only help save the iconic artefacts but also to share with and educate the public.

The Unit will in particular support and work in co operation with those existing sister organisations that have historically shared in events and planning as well as resources.
