Formed on 9 April 1938 in Germisch-Partenkirchen
from the Gebirgs-Brigade. The division was mobilized on 26 August 1939.

The division took part in the Polish Campaign in September 1939 where it captured the city
of Lemberg and then in the invasion of France and the Low Countries in May 1940. After the
surrender of France in June 1940 the division was chosen to take part in the invasion of
Great Britain but after this operation was cancelled it trained for the capture of
Gilbraltar, but this to was cancelled. On 3 November 1940 Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 100 and
the I/Gebirgs-Artillerie-Regiment 79 were detached from the division and used to form the
new 5.Gebirgs-Division. The
III/Gebirgs-Artillerie-Regiment 79 was redesignated the I/Gebirgs-Artillerie-Regiment 79
and Leichte-Artillerie-Abteilung 745 was attached to the division and became the
III/Gebirgs-Artillerie-Regiment 79. In the spring of 1941 the division was transferred to
the Balkans and saw action during the invasion of Yugoslavia. In June 1941 the division
moved east into the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa.

The division moved into the Ukraine as part of XLIX. Gebirgskorps of Heeresgruppe Süd and
took part in the encirclement of Soviet forces at Uman and the capture of Stalino in the
late autumn. The division occupied positions around Muis until May 1942 when it was
transferred to the Donetz region under XI. Armeekorps. In the summer of 1942 the division
advanced into the Cacausus as part of the German summer offensive. In February 1943
Feldersatz-Bataillon 54 was disbanded and later replaced by Feldersatz-Bataillon 79. In
March the division moved out of southern Russia and was transferred to the Balkans. On 20
November 1943 the I/Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 98 was detached and was renamed
Hoch-Gebirgs-Abteilung 3. In April 1944 the division was moved to Hungary and then back to
the Balkans in August. In December 1944 the division was transferred back to Hungary and
in January fought in the disasterous German attempt to relieve Budapest. On 12 March 1945
the 1.Gebirgs-Division was redesignated the 1st Volks-Gebirgs Division
