WRIGHT'S HILL FORTRESS

Wright’s Hill Queen’s Birthday June 5/6 2005

Report by Cpl Rae, J, 22nd Batt HRS Inc

Due to disappointingly heavy losses in the northern regiments and the inclement weather, the Queen’s Birthday Wellington Campaign this year was a relatively muted affair, but as always was enjoyed by all participants.

The events kicked off with the usual fun at the Gladstone range on the Sunday, with many rounds expended downrange from a variety of military rifles and pistols (Kevin’s wonderfully demented cackling still echoes in my ears…).  For some it was the first time they had experienced shooting handguns.  Also my new MP44 was put through its paces, it’s very nice to shoot and I imagine would be quite controllable on full auto.

Monday in Wellington dawned wet, blustery and freezing cold, and for a while it looked like the 12pm event would be called off, however there was a late rush by the public up to the hill to see a battle, so with little time to spare it was decided to throw together a small skirmish on the parade ground.  Mercifully the rain stayed away, although I was glad of my Gerbirgsjager anorak against the biting southerly.  At our disposal was a GMC 6x6 truck + trailer (c/o Kevin Derose) and a Dodge Command Car.  Pyros were kindly provided by Hamish Bruce, and armaments maintained by the ever-reliable 22nd Batt armourer, Mark Brown {whom I recommend for a commendation for services to the HRS}.

Due to the late notice, the actual battle didn’t kick off till about 12.25pm, however the 100 or so brave souls who ventured out to watch seemed to appreciate our efforts.  The scenario was a simple affair, beginning with the Germans (Paras and Gerbirgs) holding a position with captured Yank trucks and equipment, and being overrun by the Kiwis.  The battle was repeated at 2pm to a slightly larger crowd, then the area was quickly squared away and we scurried off to find some shelter.

Thanks to everyone who attended & helped out on the day, very much appreciated.  If there is enough interest, another event will be organised for Labour Day (October 24th).
