The New Zealand army was supplied with the 1937 pattern web in late 1940 it was to replace the worn out 1908 pattern webbing left over from the First World War. The majority of the web gear supplied to the New Zealand troops was of Canadian manufacture. This was due to supply ships from England constantly under threat from German U-boats.

The 37-pattern web was made from heavy duty webbing with brass hard wear. The web gear was far superior to the German leather equipment that would often deteriorate in wet conditions.
