For a solder to survive it was necessary to carry weapons & ammunition. But he would also need washing equipment to keep clean & tidy with out this basic equipment he would be unlikely to survive. All this equipment was carried in the haversack solders could carry what they liked as long as they could handle the extra weight.

 

Above is a collection of commonly carried personal equipment it includes.

(7)   Tin of 50 issue cigarettes. (19) Hair brush.
(8)   Tin mug. (20) Mirror.
(9)   Mess tins. (21) Holdall.
(10)  Match box. (22) Camouflage scarf.
(11)  Kiwi boot polish. (23) Money belt.
