Copy for the news letter needs to be to me by on the Friday of the week before we meet .- Kevin
Day 1 Friday - One bloody long drive
Day 2 Saturday - Man there where a lot of tables. There where around 90 tables divided between Fantasy and 40k all with scenery ( not enough for Arthur) laid out. So we toddled of and registered. A little later that planned Chris got up and made the usual speeches and got things rolling. By now I was pretty nervous as we all waited for our first opponent to be called out. My first game was against Space Wolves and resulted in a nice clean win. Second game was against Nova Marines who all deep striked!!!! For the first two turns I had the only troops on the table!! But when he did arrive he made the mistake of getting close a second win.my third and final game of the day was against eldar. that ended in the hand to hand phase of round two with the elder conceding. That was the end of day one, I wandered around and had a look at some of the REALLY nice armies that where there.
Day 3 Sunday - God no sleep oh well. Get the guys together and get on our way. game one was against Imperial guard (this guy got the Gold Butcher award) my second worst nightmare. This was a real blood thirsty game and was saved by one dreadnought who survived 3 lascannon, 6 plasma, and 3 battle cannon hits with out a scratch and my last scout who with a bolt pistol, dealt to a Leman Russ. That made 4 in a row!!!. As you may have guessed I was feeling pretty good about that time, but the good made sure I stayed in my place next game. Game 2 was against Blood Angels eeek. oh well how bad could it be BA Vs BA, well for a start he hid in the back corner of his deployment zone (Boo Hiss). Ok I can handle that, it was the rolling for the death company that got me.4 of my 5 man Honor Guard decided they would join along with a few others, 15 in all (bugger). Not a good game and I lost.Oh well on to the third game for the day BA Vs BA again. Well I had only myself to thank for loosing this one no bad dice this time. But I must stop chasing scouts with the Death Company.Anyway this was a lot better game and close to he was within 3 models of breaking when I did and once again the dreadnoughts did their job.Just a little note this guy went on to win the tournament.
Day 4 Monday - God no sleep - got up watched the rugby then toddled on our way. Lots of tired people this morning. First game was against Guard not again. this boy had 27 plasma guns, 7 lascannons, 7 heavy bolters, and 3 battle cannons, all packed into the back corner. I charged. I killed the front rank. I did my sweeping advance I died. That made for loss three (this guy got the bronze butcher award. what is it about IG). Nice guy cheese army. Game 2 more Space Wolves although I lost this one too. It was the best game I had on turn one we both advanced the game swung back and forth and when I finally broke he was three models away to. a great game. On to the last game, Dark Eldar. Well they had a bad start and things just never got better so I finished on a win not bad 5 wins 4 losses. the day ended with a prize giving. I can't remember most of it but Blood Angels won, Dark Eldar second, and Sisters came third, and yes sportsmanship did play a big part in who won.that reminds me Arthur "hivemind" Young came second over all in the brown nose (sportsmanship) award congrats Arthur.
Day 5 Tuesday - One bloody long drive
Would I do it again ? - In a flash it was great fun I would recommend it to any one and seeing the next one is in Auckland I expect to see you all there. - Kevin
and now for something completely different from the pen of Arthur Young ....
On the trip back from Wellington I put a bit of thought into one of the most disturbing elements of the entire Grand Tournament. Namely the large amount of Blood Angel armies, and the way they were played. As a Tyranid player I am always disappointed by my opponents refusal to come out and play in the middle of the battlefield. One exception to this rule (or so I thought) was the Blood Angel Space Marine, a band of frothing mad berserkers keen on advancing on anyone and everyone. This is an army with Super-Charged Engines, nasty combat bonuses on the charge so you equip them with heavy weapons and rely on Ultramarine tactics. This just not right, if youre going to take a Blood Angel army, at least play it as a Blood Angel army, otherwise dont try and keep up the pretence, paint them blue and get smurfy with it.
As a cautionary note, the playing of Blood Angels can be taken to the extreme, my case in point being our own blood-crazed editor. This is something to be avoided at all cost, both the condition and the player.
The Tyranid Nutritional Rectangle
Just like the human Nutritional Pyramid, the Tyranid Rectangle is used to illustrate the dietary requirements for a healthy bug lifestyle.
| Food Type | Notes | Consumption |
| GM Canned Goods | Tough, bit stringy, has a tendency to regenerate in the mouth. Watch out for cans past their used by date, these can be recognised by spiky cans and weird iconography. (Seems to be some sort of advertising gimmick) | Eat More Of |
| GM-Free Canned Goods | Seem to be exclusively grain-fed females, carefully prepared and packaged for consumption. (Dont forget to pack a Genestealer or two never go on a picnic without a can-opener) | Eat More Of |
| Free Range | Juicy and tender, and lots of it bring a doggy bag. Tends to be served with a side order of big metal boxes these tend to make a big mess, leave well enough alone. | Eat More Of |
| Battery Hens | Two distinct varieties both cooped up in large storage facilities where they are fattened up for delectable dining. Be careful with spiky ones sharp bits can get caught in teeth and can cause cavities. Serve with white wine. | Eat More Of |
| Wild/Feral Meat | Nice and chewy like jerky. Lots of meat with each serving. Served in three courses, little ones for appetisers middle sized one as mains, and a few big ones for dessert. Red wine best served with green meat. | Eat More Of |
Just in case you don't get it thats - Marines(both types), Sisters, Guard, Eldar (both types), orks.
Battle Reports
Bryan (Russian) Vs Ken (French and Allies) - Electronic Napoleonic Battle - This was fought in three games. On the left flank a large French force attack a smaller but well entrenched Russian force through wooded country but was badly repulsed by the Russians. On the right a large Russian force attacked a small French force holding a group of buildings and where able to put the French to rout without much trouble. This left us with a battle in the centre that was pretty evenly matched. French cavalry and horse artillery had brief success routing the Russian Cuirassiers, but then the Russian light cavalry counterattacked and drove the guns off the board, followed by the French Cavalry and the Danish Grenadier unit. In the centre an entrenched Russian gun battery smashed a French strongpoint to a plup while the French light cavalry tried to outflank the position combined with an infantry assault. The heros of the day where the Russian Pavlov Grenadiers who repulsed all attacks, turning to the flank to fight off the cavalry and then back t the front to meet the infantry despite harassing infantry fire. With the attack repulsed and the Russian cavalry sweeping over the battle field it was all up for the French who turned and fled, and victory was Bryan's. The Russian gun batteries dominated the days play. Even though they cannot move they are so difficult to beat that they severly limit their opponents options. Bryan seemed to think that some old guard were required by the French to match the Pavlov Grenadierrs.
Robert Davies (Chaos Warriors) beat Bryan Osbournes (Vampire Counts) - Chaos had the first turn and the chaos General mounted on his Griffin decided to get stuckin straight away and flew over the undead army, getting himself in an advantageous position to take out the black coach next turn. The vampire count didn't worry about this flying nuisance and sent his army straight towards the chaos ranks. Two Chaos spawn move forward and attacked the Necromancer who was with a unit of zombies. Then all of a sudden the necromancer was turned into a chaos spawn himself by a damn slaanesh spell. The unit of zombies was bogged down for the rest of the game fighting chaos spawn. The mounted wrights crashed into a unit of marauders on foot and a chariot, only to be totally destroyed, leaving the vampire to fight on his own. The end came when bondage of slaanesh was cast on the black coach which eventually destroyed it. A good win to Rob
Peter Beaten, cut, evisorated, etc .... by Andrew - The steadfast (Dead-fast?) Imperial foot soldiers marched to war singing their favorite marching song "Whoop ! Grande Teta! Whoop! Grande Teta!" enjoying the afternoon sun, when suddenly they where set upon by the dreaded Bitch Elves. Swallowing their pride and hiding their tents, The empire charged into battle, screaming " Supa me Grande Pao Putta!". Dark riders smashed into the ranks of the handgunners, slaging two in an instant. But the brave handgunners held their ground, and the villagers rejoiced 1 " Macho, macho man ". Another unit of hand gunners decimated a unit of scouts, who could not bear such attrocities and fled the horrid scene. Once more the villagers rejoiced ! " In the Navy, you can sail the seven seas!". The crossbowmen saw off a sizeable unit of city guard, and more Rejoicing was to be had by the villagers, who invoked the god " why-em-see-ay" . The dark riders then broke and ran down the hand gunners , and the villagers dispaired. As the full body of the Dark Elf army made contact, casualties rose drastically. By the third turn defeat was in my grasp!! Andrew you have not heard the last of me, no. I will be screaming in agony at the hand of your bitch elves once more!!
