More ramblings! More opinions! Less informative!

Another month gone by and many developments developed, as they do. So many, in fact, that I can’t list them all… that and the fact that I’m invariably behind the times means it’s rather difficult to list them as I don’t know them, BUT these things happen and I never claimed to be good at this. Well now, Warhammer appears to be shaping up to a really, REALLY interesting release now, with a lot of fancy span-dangle, with a liberal coating of eye-candy! With an avalanche of ‘buy-me-now’s, the model designers and miniature painters, and the punter’s pockets, are really being pushed, and the result of this pressure, like intense pressure on coal, has led to the figurative jewels of model collectors around the world, absolutely brilliant models! As seen, the Empire and Orc&Gobbo ranges have been vaguely renovated, with the orcs becoming more hulking and menacing, the gobbos becoming, well, I haven’t really been paying much attention to the gobbos, but I suspect the wolf-riders will be good, and the empire troops becoming cheaper, thank God, especially where cavalry is concerned (THANK YOU SIGMAR!!!). Oh, and by-the-way, doesn’t that new hel-blaster look ABSOLUTELY FECKING BEASTY!!!!!  Now looks like it deserves to scare your opponent shiznitless! Basically an improvement to the Empire and the greenskins.

Now the Dark Elves, that’s a different story altogether. These guys have got a COMPLETE overhaul! Besides looking a helluva lot more evil, they also look painful to paint what with all the weird curves and pointy bits. Original looking models, excellent idea! Lets all clap for Games Workshop getting it right!!! It’s "Ooooh, Aaaaaaah" time! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, the South Auckland Miniature Wargames Club proudly present to you the NEW DARK ELVES!!!

Apart from the miniatures, there are the rules.

As yet, I have not had the opportunity to read the new rules in full detail, but in my humble opinion (which, of course, is always the right one) they are a vast improvement on an already good system. The rules allow for a more dynamic game, with less being worried about how you’re going to deal with that INTENSELY cheesy unit, AND that near-imortal character, and more being worried about how to look like you know jack-shite about tactics since before tactics seemed to be ‘give unit such and such this item, and character so and so that’. Games should prove to be more interesting. Now this is all very well, and seems to suggest a lot of GOOD work. It appears that GW has FINALLY found out how to combine the elements of PROGRESS with IMPROVEMENT. The thing that has ME pleased, is the one thing that sets THIS new edition release apart from the last 40K new edition release. Games Workshop have improved a game, and IMPROVED the character! The spell disciplines of shadow and fire and metal and death and so on have all added to more character in the games. The local militiamen, the inadequately skilled yet zealous flagellants, the Emperor’s personal army now being able to carry a magical standard, and the new engineers all add more character than ever into the Empire army, and these sorts of changes will no doubt be prevalent in ALL the new army releases. Excellent job I do believe!

40K seems to be pretty quite lately, but the new releases are still pumping out at a steady pace, and the new armies are still drawing near release dates. The new Space Marine rhino, if my information is to be trusted, looks VERY nice…..it’s almost enough to convince me to collect Space Marines……No, no, WAAAAAAAAGH TUFGITT!!! Stomp da beekeez!!! But it DOES look awfully nice, worth looting if I do say so myself.

And last of all, the 40K tournament next month.

THE BIG CHRISTMAS BASH!!!!!

"Silent night, Holy night, All is quite, All is dead…"

Paint up yer armies, write up yer lists, make sacrifices to the God of your choice and join in the fun! Ivan and I will be there for any queries at this club meeting, if you are confused as to something about the tournament and want to know BEFORE it’s too late, so make it a point to ask Ivan or I if you need to know something. It’s on, it’s this December, and there are fabulous prizes that’ll make the financially deprived such as myself drool. Read the next Newsletter for ABSOLUTELY FINAL information. And don’t forget, it’s for fun! While the umpire is watching at least…

Cheers

Peter.

Battle Reports

Damien Neems (Vampire Counts) beat Noel Tobin (Orcs an Gobbo's)

First off let me start by saying, Bwa hahahahahahahaha!!!! A very, very good game with a lot of high points, well, high points for me anyway. Noel's force did seem to be larger at the beginning of the game (50 Gobbo archers with the army standard and general and a Wyvern being some of that). But by about the third turn his fanatics had hit everything BUT my units (like his Black Orcs who were making bone dust out of one of my Skeleton regiments) and every time I attempted to cast Curse of Years Noel managed to dispel it
(and pretty much every second spell after that). And after breaking the army's Troll the main unit of Goblins (who must have thought that the Troll was coming after them) did the time honoured Goblin tradition should an event like this arise.....they ran. Right off the board (with a little help from my Dire Wolves)! With just about everything fleeing or being spooked by something from the Vampire Counts army and the fact that their almighty General had chased after his 49 fleeing archers off the board what was left of the Orc and Goblin horde withdrew (or ran for their insignificant lives as most of us would put it).

Damien Neems (Vampire Counts) beat Bryan Osbourne (Vampire Counts)

Hmmmm, my first game using the new rules and it was against and army nearly exactly like mine. Well to cut a long story short the battle just turned into a huge free for all in the centre of the battlefield with my force managing to gain the upper hand right at the end (its hard fighting an army that won't run away no matter what and isn't effected by fear). Anyway, as far as the new rules go, they're great! The magic system is good, except for the fact that every time I cast Vanhels Danse Macabre it got dispelled! Fire
magic is very, very, very powerful. I managed to hold up a unit of Ghouls for most of the game with Fire wall and Conflagration of Doom is NOT something you want used against you (especially Vampires, all that fire just isn't good for that "white as a sheet" complexion that they love).

Peter Colson (WAAAGH ORK!!!) beat Arthur Young (Space Marines)

Da sun woz rizing and da mistz woz fading as da boss ordered da ladz ta get ready ta blitz da sektor and duff over da beekeez, show dem ‘oo da REAL dead ‘ard boyz iz! Peter Colson (Lizardmen) beat Andrew McGill (Lizardmen)

It had been building up for sme time now. Everyone was getting fed up with the politics. Some were even saying "Just kill that damned Elian kid!" The young spawnling was fleeing to the northern cities on a river raft which sank, and as he was the only survivor, due to a freak accident involving a yawning hippopotamus and the faecal matter of a flock of flamingos flying by at that precise moment, the fate of the young one was in much deliberation. Should he remain with a spawning of about the same time as his in the northern cities, or should he be returned to his own spawning in the south, which were enduring a time of hardship? But the real question was "Who’s got the most authoritaah"??? The northern Slann, or the southern? The case of the south was argued most emphatically by the revered master mage n’Fidel Castro, while the slann lord Jannit Ree-know put forth the argument of the north. Much protesting and uninformed B/S from many evangelistic skink cults had lead to the breakdown of negotiations, and the northern states held little Elian as a hostage. Something must be done at once! Approaching the field the two armies drew together. On the north, two contingents of skinks protesting loudly with signs proclaiming that returning Elian would be an injustice, whilst a salamander, a kroxigor, a stegadon, the slann lord, and 40! of his loyal Temple guard followed. On the south side were some bad-ass gangstaz who’d pop a cap in yo lilly white ace if ya lookit them twice! Respect! One columbian drug lo……uhhhhh, slann mage lord, level 3, two gangs of skinks, one stegadon (chrome stegadon, oooooooh, shiny), and about half the amount of Temple Guard as they were facing from the north. The SouthSide advanced immediately, with Castro and his temple guard racing forth with the swiftness of the jaguar god Huanchi. The skink shaaman sitting atop the immense bulk of the stegadon spied out the potently magical aura of the slann mage lord of the north, and chanting ‘A brim-full of Ashur’ levelled his finger at the venerable slann, and watched in shock as the bloated lord thrashed about violently, rending it’s heart open, and slaying 7 of it’s subjects before slumping to the ground dead. The skink shaaman, Faa’Kyu, sat in a stunned silence as the realisation slowly hit him, and immediately he held his finger as far away from him as humanly…err, skinkingly, possible, dreading he might accidentally set it off and kill himself. Immediately the threat of the intensely powerful wizard was removed, as well as half the northern skinks. Shortly after Castro and his temple guard crashed into the 33 remaining northern temple guards, along with the southern stegadon to lend some weight, and, thanks the efforts of Castro, the saurus hero Quatl, the stegadon, and some skinks and temple guard, the northern temple guard were routed (I won the combat by 20-3, MUAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!). The northern Kroxigor was skewered by a hail of poisoned arrows at about this time also, and the South Side Stegadon pursuing the Northern Temple Guard crashed into the remaining skinks. Needless to say, the skinks ran rather quickly, only to be caught and destroyed by said Stegadon, which then proceeded to munch the Northern Salamander, while the Slann Castro, and his loyal Temple Guard destroyed the Northern Stegadon. Before the end of the day, not a single model from the north remained living, and the South Side returned little Elian to his rightful place in the columbian sweat shops!

Bryan Osbourne (pointy headed gits) beat Kevin Carberry (Valiant Dwarfs)

My High Elves are really starting to warm up at playing Warmaster. After a slow start to their Warmaster career (being beaten twice by Arthur's Undead) they have now chalked up two wins against Kevin's Dwarfs. Kevin has come a long way since his first defeat at my hands and in this game he was to prove a very tough opponent. The Dwarfs were very aggressive with a brigade of slayers and warriors coming straight for my main line, with another brigade of dwarfs (including the general) chasing after my dragon rider. Unfortunately this split Kevin's army in two and I was able to defeat both parts of his army separately by using most of mine. My dragon rider kept Kevin's general and his associated brigade occupied (even though my dragon did become stranded for a while) whilst the rest of my army destroyed his slayers/warriors brigade. Kev's artillery was a lot less effective as I threw my eagles into it and then afterwards just kept away from his cannons. Finally I was able to gang up on the dwarf general and effectively surround him, to which there was really no reply. Even the excellent save of the dwarfs and the number of hits they can absorb was not enough to see them through the hail of attacks that my Elves threw at them.

All that remains now is to set the record straight against Arthur - I'm coming

to get you!!! :-)

Nick Williams (Midnight Marines) Vs Micheal Earley (Khorne)

This Game Started with me lining up my marinestrying to train my missile launchers to kill his rhinos with the axe murders in them, next to them a chaplin on a bike and 2 landspeeders lined up looking right at a squad of raptors. I won first turn but the missile launchers did nothing and I handed it over to Micheal. He moved his rhino forward, along with his Jugga and killed my scouts I had in the rocks. Then moved the raptors forwardinto my chaplin on the bike. The rest of his army charged into my impressive line of marines and killed every single one of them. Including my whole command squad. I could have stopped this if it wern't for my dumb missle launchers, and the last Raptor from my chaplin and let the psycos do their dirty work. Wtih only the landspeeder left I speed to the corner of the table and rolled a 3 to end the game.
