The Forum

Okay, most of the Tournament info was put in the last two months' Newsletters, and it's also most likely on the club website
So this month I'll just stick in a couple of things to round it all off.
To participate in the tournament, you MUST pay your club membership fee. No pay, no play.
Exceptions to this may happen if you gain assent to do so from Bryan, he is the Club Accountant, his word is final, and you must RESPECT HIS AUTHORITAAH
In the event that we do not have enough tables to fit all who wish to take part in the tournament, then we will have to turn away some players, who may help out with running the tournament if they wish. If we DO have too many people wishing to take part, then precedence goes to ESTABLISHED MEMBERS (those who were members last year) with their own armies, as they have the gaming right AND seniority. Next in line are NEW MEMBERS with their own armies, as they have the right to play, but not seniority. Then there are ESTABLISHED MEMBERS with borrowed armies, they aren't using their own force so they haven't invested as much time into WFB as those with their own armies have, but they are established members. Last comes new members who don't have their own armies, as they haven't invested as much time and are not established members, so those who HAVE invested their time into WFB and the club itself have priority over such participants.
A quick run-down on restrictions:
NO ALLIES
NO DOGS OF WAR unless you are using a completely Dogs Of War army
NO SPECIAL CHARACTERS
NO ALBION MAGIC ITEMS OR UNITS/CHARACTERS
The Army Lists:
Army lists must be written out clearly, writing must be easily read, the list itself must be organised and easy to understand
It would be a good idea to put all Heroes together on the list, followed by all the Core units, then the Special units, and finally the Rare. It also might pay to include notes such as the Unit Strength and Half Unit Strength, as well as the value of the unit if reduced to Half Strength, as this will come in handy once you come to find out the victory points
You must also bring your own copy of your army's Army Book, or Ravening Hoards if your army does not yet have an army book, or in the case of the Lizardmen, Brettonians, and Dogs Of War, the White Dwarf magazines that have the army list in it, or the print-offs from the Games Workshop website
Deployment:
When it comes to deployment, players take turns placing one of their units in their deployment zone, starting with the player with the highest number of units. In this case 'Units' are a single choice from your army list, such as a unit of Empire Spearmen, or 1-2 Dwarf Bolt Throwers, or 1-3 Goblin chariots (unless I'm mistaken and you can only take 2 per choice) and so on. Any Core, Special, or Rare choice counts as a single units. Characters are a slightly different matter, no matter how many characters are in your army, they all count as one collective 'Unit' for determining the order of deployment. Your characters are deployed anywhere in your deployment zone, and are not a unit, do not have to be within so many inches of each other, they are INDEPENDANT, however all characters must be placed at once, and they must be the last 'Unit' you deploy.
The only exception is Scouts and characters with the Scout ability. Scouts, and characters with the Scout ability are NOT counted when determining which side has the most 'Units', as they are deployed, effectively, AFTER the deployment phase and befure the first turn.
An example of this is an Empire army playing against an Orc and Goblin army. The Empire player has two cannons, a unit of pistoliers, two units of halberdiers, one unit of handgunners, a unit of Huntsmen, a Captain, a Captain Army Standard Bearer, and a Wizard. The Orcs and Goblin player has 3 units of Night Goblins, a unit of Orcs, a unit of Black Orcs, a Squig Herd, and a Special Units choice of two Goblin Wolf Chariots. He also has a Night Goblin Shaman, and an Orc Big Boss (?).
The Empire player effectively has 7 units (Cannon 1, cannon 2, pistoliers 3, halberdiers 4, halberdiers 5, Handgunners 6, and Characters 7... the huntsmen are Scouts and therefore not counted towards this)
The Orc and Goblin player has 8 (Gobbos 1, Gobbos 2, gobbos 3, Orcs 4, Black Orcs 5, Squig Herd 6, two chariots 7, and Characters 8)
The Orc and Goblin player deploys a unit first, then the Empire player, then the Orc and Gobbo player, then the Empire, and so on, until both players are finished. The characters will be deployed after all the non-scouting units.
The Empire player waits until the Orc and Goblin player finished deploying, and then may deploy his Huntsmen as detailed in the special SCOUTS rules in the Warhammer rulebook.
After deployment, both players roll a D6, the player with the least amount of 'Units' adding 1 to his roll, and the player who scores highest gets the first turn. In this case, the Empire player would add 1, as he has less units (SCOUTS are not counted, as mentioned earlier)
As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, the terrain set-up is permanent, it is not to be changed throughout the course of the tournament, no matter how unfair you feel it is. I will go to great lengths to make these tables fair fro everyone, no I will not include the so-called 'obligatory Empire Artillery Hill' in every deployment zone. I will do my best to make interesting, attractive scenery arrangements that play well, as opposed to Anna Kournikova who is just interesting and attractive...
Sorry, I got sidetracked a minute.
But the scenery set-ups will be vaguely themed, interesting looking, and UNCHANGEABLE ONCE LAID OUT!
Anyone seen altering the terrain set up will not have their score for that round counted to the total
I'm sorry I have to be hardline like this, but the tables have to be the same for everyone for it to be fair, so please respect that
And on the note of Scenery... BRING IT!
We need a LOT of scenery to lavish upon out tables... I don't want to fight over The Plains of Unrelenting Boredom and Flatness, and I'm sure no-one else does either. I've increased my personal terrain collection to help out, but you will need to bring something to fight over. I  was impressed by the devotion to bringing scenery to the 40K tournament, and am looking for a repeat here.
And finally, the scoring system for the tournament.
Last time it was too confusing for some of the players...
It's really quite simple, people
I'll provide you with a GAMESHEET at the start of the tournament, and you will find three sections on it, for Round 1, Round 2, and Round 3
In each of these, you simply write down YOUR final Victory Points for that round (first game is Round 1...), and your opponents Victory Points, whether the game was a Draw, Minor Victory, Solid Victory, or Massacre, and then give your opponent a score for his Painting, one for his Sportsmanship, one for his Generalship, and one for his Army Composition.
Your opponent MUST NOT learn what score you gave him for Paint, Sportsmanship, Generalship, and Army Composition. THIS MATTER IS NOT TO BE DISCUSSED WITH YOUR OPPONENT
If I have reason to suspect you have tried to influence your opponent in his decisions for scoring, or that he has tried to influence you, then both you and your opponent forfeit your points for that round (including Voctory points)
Don't cheat, I'm going to be ruthless. So ruthless, I will disown my Aunt Ruth, purge all Government records of Ruth Richardson (sp?), and the word 'truth' will now consist entirely of the letter T.
So just don't cheat, okay?
Thanks
That's about it I think, any queries should be directed to me really really soon by e-mail at colson@xtra.co.nz or by phone at the following number, before 3:30pm or after 8:30pm on thursdays and fridays... (09) 298-7293
Thanks you
-Peter

Battle Reports

Peter Colson (Empire) beat Nick Williams (Dwarfs)
"M'Lord Leitdorf, M'lord Leitdorf!" the young noble panted excitedly between heavy, laboured breaths
"M'Lord Leitdorf, we've found opposition. There's a small outlying farm ahead, a small hill just beyond... Dwarfs, sir, they've taken it. Got a host of gunners on the hill, and engines on the plains. Only two blocks of infantry, sir, one wouldn't number more than ten, maybe twelve. But... there was something else, I don't know what, looked like some giant anvil or something, but I felt like my hair was standing on end when I looked at the thing, the kind of feeling you get in a lightning storm, M'lord"
Karlson Leitdorf stroked his moustaches consideringly.
"Excellent report Nalesean. Order the attack"
"But M'Lord, the Dwarf race has long been friends of man, I can't condone an act of aggression against potential allies" a finely dressed noble, an 'advisor', protested suddenly.
Karlson turned his head, giving the pampered noble a stern stare, then shot him dead with a fine duelling pistol.
"Nalesean, carry a message to the regimental leaders. Order the attack. NOW."
The infantry poured into the valley, swordsmen taking right flank with the Knights of the Imperial Order of Averland, a units of Leitdorf's personal guard of Greatswords holding the center, and the left being taken by spearmen and a unit of the reknowned Knights of the White Wolf. A small unit of pistoliers skirted around the left flank, taking cover in the shelter provided by an abandoned farmhouse.
The Knights of the White Wolf had their advance hampered by the slow moving block of spearmen blocking their advance, and suffered greatly at the hands, and guns, of the Dwarf Thunderers
The infantry made a uniform advance up the valley, but the advance faltered slightly as the swordsmen retreated from the ghastly efficiency of the Flame Cannon, and the Greatswords later withdrew in the the face of the Dwarf Anvil of Doom. Luckily both units rallied soon after.
The Imperial Knights, led by the fearsome Karlson Leitdorf, engaged the smaller of the two Dwarf units and wiped it out, ran it down, and crashed into the crew of the flame cannon behind. Revenge is sweet.
Once the Spearmen had positioned themselves correctly, and only one Knight White Wolf remained from the original 6, the lone knight decided to be revenged upon the thunderers, and charged them, with the pistoliers doing the same from behind the enemy lines
The thunderers broke and were crushed mercilessly, not a single clansman escaping the slaughter.
After the demise of one of the units of Warriors, the Thunderers, the Flame Cannon, and the Stone thrower (who had an unfortunate incident with some angry men with halberds) things were looking grim indeed for Nick and his dwarf lads, as the entirety of the Empire army turned its attention towards the single remaining combat unit, and the Empire Great Cannon aimed at the badly damaged Dwarf Cannon (a better cannon vs cannon shoot out I have never seen).
..."HOLD! Mercy, good Lord, MERCY!" the Dwarf Lord bellowed.
Karlson Leitdorf smiled a wicked grin, licking the blood off his sword blade, as he readied to charge in and finish off the demoralised Dwarfs.
"M'Lord" Nalesean spoke softly, placing a hand to bar Leitdorf's sword arm. "M'Lord, we should not be too hasty, this situation may glean us advantage"
Leitdorf shook his head clear of his battle lust and nodded in agreement.
"What say you, Dwarf? Speak now whilst your lips glisten only with spittle and not your lifeblood" Karlson shouted in response to the Dwarf's cries, his voice thick with arrogance.
"Benevolent Lord, too many of my kinsmen lie dead and dying on this field already. I should fancy to see your head on a stake, but I must do what is right for my kin" the Dwarf barked back
"I like his spirit" Karlson muttered, before shouting once more
"Dwarf, these are your terms, and you will obey them, and I, utterly and without fail, and accept my patronage as your liege lord. They might seem harsh to you at first, but consider them small price for your life. I'm sure you'll agree I am being most generous. Now first, bow as you hear your new edicts, my subject" Karlson inflicted that last word with as much contempt as humanly possible. And any who know humans will know that is a lot.
