The Forum| Okay, I must most humbly appolagise that last months newsletter was rather unfortunately devoid of my usual contribution, but, it did not suffer too greatly from its absence, and so, we now return you to your scheduled reading... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ANCIENT WARGAMING! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Are YOU sick of Wraithlords confounding your every move for obscenely low cost? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Are YOU tired of watching the Cherry flavoured Space Marines getting all the bonuses without actually paying for them? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Is Archaon Lord of End Times getting YOU down? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Then why not try HISTORIC WARGAMING!?¿ | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| YES, Historic Wargaming! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Known affectionately as Ancient Wargaming due to the time periods it represents, Ancient Wargaming opens up a whole new world to you for very little investment of money! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Relive your past lives if you're a fruitcake who believes in reincarnation! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Slay men who died THOUSANDS of years ago! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| EXPLORE your cultural heritage and ancient history by KILLING the men who made it! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I've bandied this topic about, NOW it's time to put words into ACTION! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Ancient Wargaming opens up a wide and exciting world of possabilities | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| These are battles, empires and events that have relevance to YOU and the world YOU live in! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| If you were Attilla the Hun, what would you have done differently? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Would you have attacked Rome instead of holding off for so long? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| If YOU were Julius Ceasar, what would YOU have done if Brutus and his fellows had not stabbed you? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Imagine yourself as Alexander the Great, how large might your empire have been had you not fallen fatally ill? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Can you match wits with Napolean Bonapart? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Best the Great King Darius of the immortal Persian Empire? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| You can play through many famous historical campaigns, such as the Persian Wars between the Greek City States of the Delian League, or the self-destructive Peloponessian Wars between Athens and Sparta that crippled Greece and ended it's reign as one of the foremost world powers | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Rise of Rome, the Barbarian Wars, pacifying the barbar nations of the Gauls, the Huns, the Celts, and many more besides | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Fall of Rome, with the doomed attempts of the Carthaginians, and the descent into the Dark Ages | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Viking raids on Britain, the Norman rule | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Crusades, that most famous of campaign, with the legendary Knights Templars, and their rivals the Hospitalliers | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Even onto the War of the Roses in England, and the Hundred Years Wars between England and France | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| These games are often devoid of the sore spots that turn most wargames into an irritating affair of cheese and counter-cheese | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| These are games that rely on simple but effective tactics and strategies, rather than he with the biggest gun wins | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| With many armies from many periods covered, you can represent forces from your favourite ancient history | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| You can field the armies of Ancient Greece, with the potent Hoplite Phalanxes squaring off against each other, or the Chariotry of the New Kingdom Egyptians, the mighty Greek Heroes of the Trojan era such as Herakles, Achilles, Hector, Oddysues and many more besides. Ancient Roman, Republican Roman, Vikings, Normans, Crusaders and all | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Samurai, Chinese, Indian | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| British, French, Assyrian too | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| No matter what, there's an army for YOU | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There are a few systems readily available and already running at the club right now | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There is, of course, Warhammer Ancient Battles | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The rulebook itself is cheap compared to Warhammer Fantasy, at just 55 points with two army lists included already | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I will be using 1/72nd scale plastics for my Warhammer Ancients armies (and possibly others too) and this works out INCREDIBLY cheaply | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| For $20 I can make a full 2000 point Greek army | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In Warhammer Fantasy or 40K, this would get me 4 men. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| You can see immediately the advantage here | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| For an invariably low cost, I can field an absolutely IMMENSE army for those HUGE games I've always wanted to have! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| And because Warhammer Ancients doesn't have magic or dragons or all these other difficult time consuming rules like massed artillery and animosity tests and so on, large games can progress fairly easily, and still be no less exciting than your average game of Warhammer | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Italeri range can field Barbarian armies, Roman/Republican Roman armies, Greek armies, Crusader armies, Persians, Moors and Saracens, and some assorted others also (like the Hundred Years Wars French and British, to name a few) and there are ever increasing ranges available. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Undoubtedly scattered around Auckland are further ranges of cheap historic miniatures ready for enthusiastic gamers to give them a good home | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There is also DBA, which is a smaller-scaled wargame, quick and easy... the drunken high school cheerleader of the wargaming world quite obviously! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| As it is, at that scale and armies of that size, it is quite inexpensive to field such an army or three... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Then of course, there's DBM... which is much like DBA Senior, and DBA being DBM Junior... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I don't know much about this system, but am interested in giving either of those two a go, and quite possibly ammassing an army for them | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Or maybe three | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Who knows, one of them may even end up painted, SHOCK HORROR! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There is also a fourth system, a relatively small system, not known to many as far as I can tell, produced by a Russian company and imported by Italeri | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It goes by the name of Age Of Battles | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There's a copy of it at my local model shop, for about $50-$60 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I'm wondering if the club should pick up a copy of it, it may turn out to be an interesting game | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| PLEASE consider this option and give me a definitive answer this coming Club meeting | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| YOU lot contribute your club fees to make our funds, we really do need your answer, yes or no, on whether or not we purchase this game with the club funds | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| At the very least, it will mean there'll be two decent sized club-owned armies for you all to use in one system or another | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| And, of course, I feel I should mention another old favourite of the veterans at the club. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Rapid Fire | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A WW2 wargame | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Who can deny the appeal of the worlds largest conflict to date? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| See if YOU can outclass Rommell, the Desert Fox | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Could YOU do a better job of the Normandy landing? You could hardly do worse... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Battle against the Russians on the eastern front | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Paradrop into enemy lines | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| At least consider giving this wonderful game a try | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I'm sure Kevin and Arthur, amongst others, would be only too happy to rant about the comparative virtues of this brilliant game | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| And finally, contacts for some of the places where you can obtain historic models | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Historic Games | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 469 Khyber Pass Road | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Newmarket | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ph. (09) 523 5469 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| www.historic-games.co.nz | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| matt@historic-games.co.nz | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Open Tuesday to Saturday 10-6 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Thursday until 8 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Sunday until 4 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Closed on Mondays | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Steve's Model Shop is my nearest model shop, where I pick up a large number of the Italeri range from | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 299 Great South Road, Papakura | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ph. (09) 299 7532 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
They don't know much about wargaming, but they have an
adequate supply of historic models in the 1/72nd scale, and some decent scenery items.

Battle Reports
| Okay, time to start off with a gripe once more. |
| WHERE are your Battle Reports? |
| I'M not getting them |
| Kevin doesn't seem to be getting them. |
| WRITE your battle reports. |
| Make this newsletter interesting and worth reading |
| My usual tripe isn't enough, we need battle reports. |
| You get to game here for an incredibly low cost, against some really great gamers, and some beautifully painted armies (not mine obviously, but people like Bryan and Arthur and Glenn, even Damien!) |
| You get a free Newsletter, you get to take part in tournaments and competitions and campaigns |
| Don't you think it was perhaps time to give a little back to your club? |
| After your game, immediately after, grab a pen and some paper, and write about 5 to 10 lines about what happened, what was interesting, while the game is still fresh in your mind. |
| I always have spare pens and paper handy, if you don't have any |
| Get these reports into me, or to Kevin, the Newsletter's Editor in Chief |
| All it takes is a minute or two to say "The enemy advanced quickly on my forces, but my awesome firepower cut him down. His space marines tried desperately to get into combat, jump-pack armed Assault Marines and Bikers trying to claim the right flank, as I held them off with my Dreadnought, while my guns dealt to the rest of the army" |
| Just something descriptive like that, perhaps a bit bigger. |
| That's all we need, an idea of what happened in the game. |
| It's not hard, and you owe it to the club. |
| Peter (Goblinz!) vs. Daniel (Empire) |
| Dis rite 'ere is da troo and troof-full account of wot 'appened when da Gobbos of WAAAAAAGH!-Fat Gitt enk..urrrr, met da 'Umies of da Empire of da 'Umies. |
| Don't berlieve wot dose 'Umies mite say, dey'z all liars, and liars in a bad way, not good liars like us, no, us liars tell da troof |
| Well wot 'appened woz dat da ladz was off marchin, and da wolf boyz woz gettin right miffed at 'avin to walk behind da rest of da ladz az dey said wot it woz not fair dat dey should be stuck behind da smelly runts, wot smelled even worse dan da trollz wot was wiff dem. |
| So when da boss, Frank Zappa, 'oo woz boss onna count of 'e bein all big an' 'pressive wiff da green shiny lights zappin around is ead and anyone wot said 'e wozn't boss got their heads 'sploded... wot woz I sayin? |
| Oh yeah, when da boss Frank Zappa said dat dere woz 'Umies ahead, and dat everyone should attack da 'umies, everyone except da boss of course, coz 'e said 'e woz supervisin, da wolf boyz chucked a wobbly and wouldn't do nuffin |
| 'Dis rite miffed Frank Zappa, an 'e tried to stomp da wolf boyz wiff Gork's foot (or maybe it woz Mork'z) but Gork lovez stompin on 'Umies more den on gobbos, an so 'e stompeded on da 'umies cannonz and made dem fall ter bitz, and den he done stomped on more of da 'Umies cuz they made funny squishy noises wot 'e liked |
| Da trollz woz taking forever to go nowheres accuz they'z too stoopid to know wotz wot, and da wolf boyz sat around doing nuffink, until some 'Umies on 'orses came riding up, wearing wolf skins, and so da Big Boss Skarpa got da ladz in order an dey all rushed ter stomp da 'Umies. Skarpa waved 'is magic whackin' stick around, but 'e said da 'Uman wozn't playing fair accuz 'e wouldn't stand still for him to hit wiff 'is magical whacky stick |
| Da 'Umie wolf boyz gave Skarpa's wolf boyz a good lickin, and da ladz runned off. |
| All the while, Frank Zappa, and da uvver shamans Uzzawanka and Buggrit woz giving da 'umies da evil eye, and woz stompin dem wiff big green foots, and den da ladz got to grips wiff da 'Umies |
| A lot of da ladz got snikked in da 'urty bitz, and dey decided dey'd gived the 'Umies wot for already and da 'Umies ad learned dere lesson, so da ladz went home. |
| I wood like to point out right now dat dey did NOT run away, dey'z just naturally fast on their foots and the idea of roast squig and beer enticed dem 'ome quick, rite? |
| Dey didn't run away, not at all, nope |
| Not us goblinz |
| Us goblinz is brave |
| Brave |
| Brave wot don't run away |
| Never... |
| Rite? |
| Rite |
| Peter, Hamish and Graeme (Empire, huzzah!) vs. Bryan, Glenn and Marcel (Chaos, boo!) |
| If luck favours the better painted army, Hamish, Graeme and I were screwed from square one. |
| For his second ever game of Warhammer, Hamish did a damn good job, using his 750 points of Empire to hold up Bryans 2000 points of Chaos to some great effect, managing to remove all threat posed by a unit of Flesh hounds, and crippling another. |
| A brave and valiant last stand, Hamish, your passing shall be mourned and celebrated by the men of the Empire for years to come, hehe. |
| As for myself, I met with mixed success |
| I managed to do a fair amount of damage on the advancing hoard of chaos, and weakened their centre somewhat, but with heavy losses, and when those accursed Spawn hit... |
| Graeme was the golden boy of our team. |
| He collapsed the entire left flank of the Chaos army (which was OUR right flank) with some slight support from my cavalry, rolling up the chaos forces and leaving their centre gaping open. |
| At the end, the battle was inconclusive, yet hard fought, and could easily have gone either way had we continued our struggle |
| Perhaps some other time. |
| Damien (High Elves) beat Marcel (Chaos) |
| A deathly silence covered the valley of Legil-Ganduil. The pains had always had a reputation of being a quiet place where many an Elf could find a peaceful solitude in amongst the beautiful Ulthuan countryside. Well..that's how things used to be. Alinaar knew this would change, and it would be partially by his own doing. Childhood thoughts, though a few centuries old, flooding back through the Elven Princes young (by Elven standards) mind, as if they were only the events a few summers past, but as much as he would have liked to spend this time reminiscing about happier times, he knew he could not. He knew they were coming. He had known for a few days now, thanks to his Nagarythian allies to the west. These indeed were dark times for everyone, not just Elven kind, as the dark forces has risen to plague the world en masse once again. But today was going to be a day for the forces of light Alinaar vowed, he would rid his homeland of the evil plague making it's way along the countryside, and he would stop them from marching on towards the magnificence that was his home of Tor Senthoi-Oriour. He was ready for them, let them come and find out how superior the Asur were in battle. |
| And come they did. |
| The silence was broken by piercing screams and bellows of agony and ecstasy, and of things beyond mortal. Alinaar could see them now. Marching down into the plain. A host of heavily armored warriors. But more importantly the abomination that was leading them, standing twice the height of anything on this battlefield the scent of Chaos oozing out of him, defiling the Princes very acute sense of smell from all the way over the other side of the valley. Surrounded by his loyal bodyguard of brothers-in-arms Alinaar raised his great woodsmans axe into the air and sent the wickedly sharp blade slicing down through the air. A few moments later two shadows flew over the Chracians heading straight towards the vile thing. A few moments later a near deafening shriek of pleasure could be heard as the daemonic being was flung off it's feet, two bolts sticking out from it's brightly coloured chest. Although by the looks of things, the first bolt had barely even penetrated the evil beings thick skin. |
| The Elves manning the bolt throwers on top of the hills on the end of the valley did not allow themselves time to rejoice any. They had hoped that the double shot of fanged fury would silence the slave of chaos, but this was not to be as, much to their shock, the thing stood back up and flew almost halfway down the battlefield. As the four Elves struggled to get their two machines re-loaded they noticed that their Princes retinue was starting to act in quite the strange manner. Prince Kiith had given the order to stay put and wait for the enemy to come to them, and for them to slay anything that stood taller than an Elf before anything else, yet, he and his other lion pelt clad warriors had already started moving. Something wasn't right. A cry of desperation flew through the air "It's the Daemon! He has our liege under his spell! Kill it, now!!!" It was Isimir, the mage. The bolt thrower crew knew that his words above any other would ring truer on these matters. He and the other mage Eláldur had done their best to fight off the potent magics that this horde had, but could not last long under the immense power of the Daemon Prince, and they both felt that Daemons power fluctuating, although it didn't feel it, the Daemons unholy body was grievously wounded from the bolt embedded deep in it's chest. The crew had little time left, two more bolts were thrown into the air. For a moment time stood still for the four Elves as the first bolt barely missed the thing. The second, as if guided by Asuryan himself, struck the foul thing right in the head, silencing the things squeals once and for all as a spray of pink and bright blue ichor spurted out from the wound as the corrupt prince of the dark god of pleasure fell. But they were too late. Not that much sooner had their enemies leader fallen his subjects began their assault the crew watched in shock as a multi-colored chariot slammed into their Princes regiment. |
| Alinaar had little time to react to the machine of torturous enrapture, but his reflexes were sharper than the edge of his axe, and managed to avoid the scythed wheels, five of his fellow White Lions did not. The blood of the proud flew high as Alinaar sought atonement for them, Elriondil, the units leader and personal guard of Alinaar Kiith, cleaved through the chariot separating the horses from the chariot itself in a blow that sent dark wood splinters and even soil flying into the air while Alinaar himself swung his axe in a perfect dance of graceful skill, honed from decades beyond decades worth of practice, severing one of the crew mans heads clean off of his shoulders while cutting the other foul warrior of chaos in half, their ornate armor offering little protection to the Princes might. "Hah, is that the best you barbarians can do?", an almost arrogant tone entered his voice as the second wave of attack from the foot troops of Slaanesh fell upon them. |
| Around the other side of the hill Thrilmaril readied his bow once again, taking aim at the, smaller unengaged unit of Chaos warriors, standing almost a for taller than any of the other children of chaos. His arrow let loose, magically multiplying into three shafts in mid flight, all three hit their targets, two being stopped by the warriors near impossibly tough armor, while the third struck one of their number right in the throat sending him toppling onto his knees almost in a state of dying worship. Another few bolts of lighting had jumped out from the satanic banner held aloft by the dark warriors at his regiment of citizen levy, their armor and shields offering little protection as more of their own were being flung backwards by the force of the luminous bolts of magical energy. They had to stay put until the opportunity arose for the countercharge. The cries of the wounded or dying were soon cut off by the thunderous sound of hooves. Thrilmaril watched in disbelief as a unit of Elven nobility charged headlong into the largest of the Chaos regiments, the Shadow Warriors from Nagarythe had been harassing them and the hounds of chaos the entire battle, preventing them from keeping pace with the rest of their own forces, the hounds were long since gone, driven off by the longbows that were perched underneath the Bolt Throwers. "You impetuous fools!" Thrilmaril hissed "You were supposed to wait and support us!". His words fell of deaf ears. The nobles had already made it into battle with the lesser warriors, the battle was very short before the mounted Elves ran back from where they came from, and even further, followed closely behind by the blood lusting humans. Thrilmaril looks around him, he needed to do something, and he needed to do something now, and it seemed his prayers had been answered. The bolt throwers had now turned their attention onto the unit of giant armored men Thrilmaril himself had been firing at, a single bolt impaling three of them while six more taking down another one, the unit was weakened and had shown their flank to them, this was his chance. With that Thrilmaril drew his sword and sounded the charge to his fellow Elves. |
| A loud crunching sound came from a bald, unarmored Chaos Warriors head as Alinaar brought the hilt of his axe right up into his opponents jaw before bringing his axe blade right down on top of the same warriors head, he was much, much faster than any of his opponents, and it showed, a few moments later another two armored hulks lay dead by his hand. To followers of Chaos were caught entirely by surprise, they had charged in expecting to butcher only to be butchered by the superior soldiers. The Elves pushed on into the chaos unit, Alinaar at the forefront. It was too much for the Chaos Warriors, waking up from their 'blissful' trance of pain and pleasure to let common sense prevail as they ran from the woodsmen. The Elven Prince stood among his men, drawing in much needed air. His pure white robes and golden armor stained with the blood of his enemies and that of his own kinsfolk. War was an ugly affair, but a necessary one at this point in time in this world. The enemy will not quit, they will not stop, they will not yield. They will just keep on going, and it was up to Alinaar, the Asur people, and even the...lesser...races to make them stop and beat them all the way back to the hells from whence they came. But immediate matters were more important, as Alinaar surveyed the battlefield, Thrilmaril and his spear elves had been victorious against the large chaos warriors and had chased them down. From here he could see the larger Chaos unit disperse and retreat, leaderless and their so called superior warriors all fleeing or dead, their will to fight had left them. They would not go far, the Shadow Warriors had already set about to taking care of any survivors, they would be found and dealt with accordingly, no mercy was going to be giving the any follower of the Chaos gods. The Asur were the lords of this battlefield this day. Alinaar could return to Tor Senthoi-Oriour to prepare for the burial of the fallen, but not before to bodies of the slain Daemon Prince and his followers was burned. No more would they be allowed to defile Ulthuan, in life or death. |
