Last month Bryan Orsbourne managed to lose two 25mm Roman infantry miniatures. If anyone has found these he would be greatly appreciative if they could be returned. Many Thanks.
BATTLE REPORTS
Okay, enough's enough.
WHERE the hell are the battle reports?
WHY are they not being written?
Really, it would be nice to see what's going on at the games club while I'm getting trounced at warhammer
Damien's written his reports consistently, I've written reports... when Kevin has the time and actually wins a game he's written reports
But very few else have
I'm almost at the point where I decide whether to drop it entirely, or to start getting violent.
Battle reports. NOW
Peter Colson (Ancient Greeks) narrowly defeated Bryan Orsbourne (Romans)
My first ever game of Warhammer Ancients
What a doozy, VERY entertaining game!
I had arrayed before me the full panoply of war!
Strategos Aristocles, my Greek General, accompanying a unit of Athenian Sacred Band Hoplites
With them fought bravely the mighty Lacedaemons, the fighting men of Sparta!
Large and imposing these units were, neither standing less than 30 men
To their ade was the mighty Theban and Greek cavalry, who achieved naught but disgrace throughout the game
The Romans brought with them two Regular Legions, a Veteran legion, two Auxilliary legions, two Auxilliary cavalry, Auxilliary archers, and 3 bolt throwers.
The field of battle was arranged to look a fair bit like Greece, with a nice river anchoring the right flank, and some hills breaking up the ground on the left-most flanks and center, leaving a somewhat large area of ground in the center-right flank for my infantry phalanxes to advance along, letting my cavalry deal with the left flank.
THIS is the terrain that spawned the creation of the Hoplite Phalanxes, and favoured my style greatly
Bryans' Romans deployed with the regular legions taking up the centre left (my right) of his battle line, an auxilliary legion to their left with two of the bolt throwers flanking it, his archers in the centre, with the Veteran Legion and one of the cavalry units behind them, and an auxilliary legion and the other cavalry on his right (my left)
As battle began, the gods spoke favourably of the outcome, and I was blessed with 8 Oracle points to boost combat or allow break-test re-rolls.
My Theban cavalry screamed down the left-most flank, and the Greek cavalry approached warily on the opposite side of the hill to the Thebans. My Hoplites advanced on the clear ground on the centre right, towards the auxilliary and regular legions, taking heavy fire from bolt throwers along the way
The theban cavalry made contact with the romans, and managed to beat them, and pump up the resolution with Oracle points.
But they bloody passed their break test
Combat dragged out for several turns for them, but the thebans eventually won through and pushed the roman cavalry right off the field of battle, only to return later the be lined up by the Auxilliary legion and Roman cavalry, who both charged, but failed to break the brave Thebans
All the while the Greek cavalry had an unfortunate encounter with the Roman Auxilliary Archers, and ran from them, pursued for a couple of turns, halting their rout RIGHT on the table edge (well an inch or two before, but that makes little difference)
The Hoplites advanced, the Athenian Sacred Band toward the center, the Spartans holding the extreme right, advancing with the river to anchor one flank, and the hills the other.
The roman auxilliary legion moved back, with the veteran legion taking their place, and battle was joined, the serried ranks of the Phalanxes breaking into battle with the regular and veteran legions
The Athenians fought bravely against the two regular legions and beat them soundly, but the legions were stubborn so automatically passed their first break test. In the second and third rounds they were soundly beaten, and fled, one being run down by the Hoplites, the other crushed once more when battle was joined again
The sight of one unit of Athenian hoplites crushing the roman legions demoralised the Romans, and their general, remaining auxilliary cavalry, auxilliary archers, and bolt throwers fled the field
The Spartans, accounted greatest individial soldiers of all of Greece, had mixed successes with the roman veteran legion, and finally lost a combat when the auxilliary legion got stuck in, and I rolled a bloody 12 on my break test, on the last turn of the game!
And entire 835 point unit, lost to one bad dice roll.
I managed to scrape through a win by 173 points, but if it hadn't been for that last unlucky roll, it could easily have been 1000
Oh well, the gods only predicted slightly better than average, and that's what I got
Hurrah!
Peter Colson (Empire) Beat Marcel (Chaos)
The men of the Empire marched stalwartly forward to the field of battle.
Each knew in his heart that the chances were, he would not march from the fields of war ever again
But they marched anyway.
Scores of men, determined to sell their lives on the chances that they may halt the growing evil of the Lord of End Times, that their wives and children would be spared the blades of the Swords of Chaos
In Sigmar they trusted, and the indomitable will of the spirit of man filled them with the courage of dead men walking.
The count Lars Ulrich looked upon his disparate troops, knowing they were not really necessary there. The evil could be halted only if Archaon fell.
He supressed a shudder as that accursed name crossed his mind.
His griffon, Fluffy, shifted uneasily underneath him. He had personally raised the griffon from a hatchling, when he was but 4 years old, which accounted for the unfortunate name, and he could tell that the beast was uneasy, agitated.
The scouts returned from their prowling at a dead run, screaming warnings of the imminent presence of the Chaos host.
Lars listened with but half an ear, his mind set with the need of his purpose. He would slay the Lord of End Times personally.
He ordered a full march in battle readiness, and his men complied.
Artillery was set up in preperation to bombard the accursed heretics, and the gunners with their finely crafted Longrifles set up to cover the approach of the Chaos horde
The infantry took up their positions, and awaited the enemy.
As the enemy host descended upon the imperial lines, revealed finally from the chill mists, Lars issued a personal challange
"ARCHAON!" he roared, "This day, you will die by my blade!" for such was it fated to do
Charging through the gap in his own lines, the great wings of his griffon beating at the air to gain height and speed, the great beast crashed into the Lord of End Times, and the blade of Lars Ulrich scored a wound on the Lord of Chaos Undivided.
Fluffy quickly slew the foul Daemon Steed Archaon was mounted on, and as Archaon saw the futility of his own attacks upon the mighty Man of the Empire, knowing full well his own mortality when matched against the fury of Sigmar's Chosen, he fled the count, only to be cut down by the pursuing human on his loyal griffon.
At such a great loss, despair was in the hearts of all who had followed Archaon, and they quit the field, knowing all was lost and the great threat posed by Chaos, shattered forever.
As Lars wiped his sword on Archaon's cloak, he smirked and chuckled to himself "Archaon, Lord of Times Ended"
Peter (Men of Gondor and High Elves) beat Anthony (those foul goblin scum!)
This has to have been the FUNNIEST game I've played in a long time, just the sherr frustration at constantly FAILING to gain priority when I needed it the most!
The objective of the game, was for me to get my Elves and Men off the far end of the table, with the minor inconvenience of there being a WHOOOOOOOOLE lot of goblins inbetween my army, and the far end of the table
Now normally this is played across a table 6 foot wide.
I played it across about 2 and a half feet.
THAT'S nail biting entertainment!
I had to get at least half my force over the edge to win, and my god it was a struggle!
Suffice to say, almost half my force were butchered by those dastardly little goblins, and the rest got off the table by chickening out and buggering off leaving their mates to die in a sea of malicious goblins, or by sneaking around rocks and trees while the goblins were distracted with making big red stains out of my Men of Gondor and Elven Swordsmen
If you ever want an insanely tough game, stack the odds against yourself and try your best to scrape a narrow victory out of the ordeal, VERY entertaining to say the least
